Gallium Photonic Computer Series 74
New improved1 design!
Sci-fi supercomputer from the days when computers consisted solely of had lots of flashing lights.
The new Series 74 represents a quantum shift2 in computing capability from the MKII.
Rather than the traditional microcontroller of the MKII, the Series 74 utilises the latest3 in discrete4 digital logic ICs to perform photonic computations.
The matrix follows a similar fixed-colour, fixed-shape design of the original BC-01 model; and similar dimensions of approx 404x171x34mm.
Sadly the circuit design does not permit the original entropy reset features; but instead there is now:
- Emitter ratio - superficially manifesting as fully variable brightness (the video doesn't really capture it)
- Phase coupling - switchable topology of the polyphasic Schmitt-trigger inverter rings. (The effect is initially sutble but once you see it, you see it)
It still contains no RGBs, instead using warmer, purer single-color LEDs.
Please note the pictures here are the preproduction model, so forgive some slight jank - the shipping version will have some refinements to the printed parts, case, and switch/knob alignments.
- 1. Entirely subjective
- 2. Shift direction not specified
- 3. Circa 1983
- 4. Less is, of course, more - the slight price increase reflects having so many ICs (72 per unit!)
1 Nov 2026: I'm planning to make a small initial batch of these, aiming for despatch early January. This is currently on waitlist status; I'll be in touch with everyone I got on the waitlist for the MKII first but please drop me line mw@mwworks.uk if you'd like to be added to the list.
Once again appreciate your support in a) buying direct from the maker - and b) allowing me the time to make these in small batches.
Power requirements
To prevent e-waste, this is a BYO charger and cable device. We've all got tons of these lying around and you likely want a specific length/colour of cable rather than another cheap PVC cable for landfill. Pretty much anything will work - you'll need:
- A USB power source - this can be a charger or a computer, capable of providing approx 1A
- A USB A-C or C-C cable, depending on the above
There are 2 USB-C ports - on the RHS and rear - for flexibility in concealing the cable vs wall mounting.
Shipping
Prices as below. (Paypal account not required - just click the Checkout button to go to payment) Please note:
- US orders: postal shipping includes pre-paid tariff charges, so there should be nothing to pay at your end. UPS charges do not include so you may get charged for customs. (Cost is the same £50 since the difference is about the same as the tariff cost.)
- Other than the above exception for the US I cannot be responsible for any import fees you may have to pay
- EU orders are currently not available, but please email me @ mw@mwworks.uk for details
- Let me know if you need any other destinations (shouldn't be a problem!)
